COLUMBUS, Ohio (Legal Newsline) – Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray announced on Tuesday that his office received a record number of complaints in 2010.
Cordray said that more than 31,000 consumers filed official complaints with his office this year, surpassing the 2009 high of 30,259 complaints.
“This year Ohioans sought help and reported problems more often than any other year on record,” Cordray said.
“My office responded by using all of the powers at our disposal to fight for their rights under the law. We filed 42 lawsuits against businesses that violated consumer laws and were awarded more than $7.6 million in consumer restitution, civil penalties and other relief.”
The figure was released in the Attorney General’s Office’s 2010 Consumer Protection Annual Report.
Complaints ran the gamut, with the top five concerning motorized vehicles, credit reporting and financial services, internet or phone, household goods or property information, and mortgages.
Other complaints came in about shopping, food or beverages, professional services, sweepstakes or prizes, computers or electronics, and utilities.
Cordray is in his last weeks on the job. Mike DeWine will be AG in 2011.
