DETROIT (Legal Newsline) – Michigan’s Republican attorney general hopeful, Bill Schuette, is leading in the polls heading into Tuesday’s election.
According to the results of a survey released Friday by company Epic-MRA, Schuette is ahead of Democrat David Leyton, the Genesee County prosecutor, 47 percent to 37 percent.
Also according to the survey, 4 percent of voters said they would vote for a third-party candidate while another 1 percent said they were “leaning toward” a third-party candidate.
Eleven percent said they were either undecided or refused to answer, the poll found.
Schuette has said his No. 1 focus will be public safety if elected attorney general.
Meanwhile, Leyton, who has tried more than 20,000 cases as a prosecutor, has said he wants to create a public corruption division to crack down on corrupt officials. He also wants to eliminate lifetime health benefits for public officials and cut politicians’ pay.
The Lansing-based polling company surveyed 600 likely voters in the state from Oct. 23-26.
The poll, conducted for the Detroit Free Press and local TV stations WXYZ, WJRT, WOOD and WILX, had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
