SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Legal Newsline)- California Attorney General Jerry Brown does not have plans to investigate a former state legislator who was captured on tape bragging about his trysts with a lobbyist.
Brown’s office said there are no indications that former Assemblyman Mike Duvall, R-Yorba Linda, broke the law, even as some watchdog groups, including Common Cause, have called on Brown to investigate whether Duvall traded votes for sex.
Duvall, 54, was vice chairman of the Assembly’s utilities committee. He is married.
His July 8 boasting of an affair with a woman identified as a lobbyist for an energy company was caught on a microphone in a legislative hearing room.
Meanwhile, the FBI has said it is investigating Duvall. The Assembly Ethics Committee, for its part, has dropped its inquiry because the Legislature’s legal counsel says the committee lacks jurisdiction since Duvall resigned from office.
Even so, Assemblyman Paul Krekorian, the Los Angeles Democrat who co-chairs the Assembly Ethics Committee, has said he wants to explore whether there is a way the panel can investigate the matter.
