Calif. DA won’t run for attorney general

SACRAMENTO-Riverside County District Attorney Rod Pacheco says he will not run for California attorney general in 2010.

The former Republican state assemblyman made the comment Wednesday at a press conference in Sacramento, where he is pushing a series of proposals to overhaul the state’s death penalty policies.

If not approved by the Democrat-led state Legislature, Pacheco has threatened to take them to the voters in the form of a ballot initiative.

The state’s current attorney general, Jerry Brown, can seek re-election in 2010, but he is widely expected to run for the governor’s office, a post he held from 1974 through 1982.
