  • Democrat; Considered an activist attorney general.

  • Appointed to the post by then-Governor Howard Dean after Jeff Amestoy was named Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. Won re-election in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006.

  • Graduated from Notre Dame (B.A.) in 1979 and Cornell (J.D.) in 1974.

  • Worked for the Chittenden County State's Attorney office from 1975-78, first as a deputy and later as the State's Attorney, a post he would hold again a decade later (1989-92) after eleven years in private practice. Chittenden is Vermont's largest county, home to Burlington.

  • Served as Vermont's Secretary of Administration (1992-97) under Howard Dean.
